Immunoglobulin is also known as an antibody. It is important to protect us from bacterial and viral invasion. There are four types of immunoglobulins:

1. Immunoglobulin A (IgA)

IgA can be found in mucus and fluids like saliva, tears, sweat, gastric fluid and blood.

It acts as a gatekeeper by trapping foreign substances in the place where microbes might enter easily such as lungs, sinus, stomach and intestines.

2. Immunoglobulin G (IgG)

It is the smallest in size among all immunoglobulins, we call it “little soldier”. It can be found in almost all body fluids, including blood, lymph fluid as well as fluid in brain, spine and abdominal cavity.

Due to its size, it can pass through the placenta to protect the foetus. It also assists white blood cells to overtake bacteria and viruses as well as neutralise toxins.

It also makes sure our defence army remembers and reacts immediately towards the microbes encountered previously.

3. Immunoglobulin M (IgM)

IgM has the largest size compared to others. It is located mainly in lymph fluid and blood.

IgM is always the first responder to react to the invasion of germs. It dissolves and traps the invaders whenever they enter our body.

4. Immunoglobulin E (IgE)

IgE is the rarest immunoglobulins among all. It is the “allergy warrior” which is mainly located in lungs, skin and mucus.

It reacts against foreign substances such as pollens, dust mites, pet dander, fungus, spores as well as allergic reactions e.g. milk and medicines.

Colostrum is rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals, and a high amount of growth factors and immune factors including IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE.

These immune factors can protect us from bacteria and viruses. Growth factors help repair cells and stimulate cell proliferation.
