Not being able to have a quality sleep not only affects a person’s emotions, memory and his or her performances in work and studies, it may also lead to side effects on health, be it short term or long term.

While having trouble sleeping at night, many people would put the blame on “the coffee they had in the day”. However, is this true? What kind of conclusion could we make for people who do not drink coffee instead?

Besides coffee, there are many other foods that you could never imagine and may deprive your sleep quality. What kinds of food are they? Let’s read on and find out now!

Beverages and Foods with Caffeine

Caffeine may stimulate our nervous system, increase our breathing and heart rate, as well as putting us in a state of excitement. Every person reacts differently to caffeine, having beverages and foods that contain caffeine at night may lead to poor sleep quality and we may not be able to have a good rest.

Not only coffee, chocolates, carbonated drinks, teas, energy drinks and other foods also contain caffeine. If you wish to have a quality sleep, remember to avoid the consumption of these foods at night.

High Consumption of Heavy Foods

Oily, spicy or salty foods are also known as “heavy foods”. Eating too many oily and high calories foods may prolong the time taken for digestion; spicy foods such as, spicy hotpots, chillies, garlics and other irritating foods may also lead to heartburn and unhealthy digestion easily.

Over seasoned foods typically taste saltier and it may stimulate our body to absorb more water and produce more urine. Conditions including unhealthy digestion, stomach discomforts and frequent urination are also the potential factors that may affect our sleep.

Gas-producing Foods and Drinks

Foods like sweet potatoes, potatoes, yams, broccoli, radish and carbonated drinks may irritate the increased secretion of gastric acid.

Individuals with digestive problems may experience a large amount of gases produced in his or her stomach while the foods are being digested. It eventually causes bloating and fart. If the conditions become severe, the person may suffer from serious bloating and stomach ache, besides having bad quality of sleep.

Alcohol Drinks

Many people used to believe that drinking alcohol may let us fall asleep more easily. But, in fact, alcohol abuse may obstruct the recovery process in our body during sleep, not to say failing to gain long hours of quality deep sleep.

Therefore, this is why many people may feel even low in energy when they wake up from a hangover. One or two glasses of red wine before bed surely could help better our overall wellbeing. However, anything more than that may not be good for you.

Whenever we encounter troubles sleeping, we may need to reflect on our eating habits if they bring risks to our health, only then we may be able to act upon the cause.

Besides our diets, PhytoFairy also suggests a 30 minutes of relaxation period before bed. Let your body be aware of the state you are in, that you are preparing to sleep soon. Let go of the troubles, pressures and negative emotions kept in your mind, so that we may achieve a better sleep quality.

Sleep and health are closely related to one another. A good quality of sleep is always a must!
