It is once again the Dragon Boat Festival! During this festive season, rice dumplings, or in Chinese we say “Zongzi” will definitely be the main dish of everyone’s plate. As you are reading this article, I am sure you have eaten quite a number of rice dumplings already!

Out of many different types of rice dumplings, including meat dumplings, alkaline rice dumplings, nyonya dumplings, crystal rice dumplings and other flavors, among all types of rice dumplings, which one is your favorite? Rice dumplings are always added with high fat pork meat, cured meat and other ingredients. These ingredients are commonly added with cooking oil to mix the glutinous rice evenly. Therefore, they are regarded as high fat food.

Even though the size of alkaline rice dumplings and crystal rice dumplings are relatively smaller, they consist of higher sugar contents that you may need to look out for!

Most dumplings are made from glutinous rice and the glycemic index of glutinous rice is much higher than that of white rice. Thus, our blood sugar level may rise even quicker than we normally do after consuming glutinous rice. Individuals with diabetes are advised to take dumplings in moderation to avoid the spike in blood sugar level.

As for crystal rice dumplings, they are made from sago rice. Although it might be easier to digest by the human body and lower chances of getting bloating, the pickled fruits in the crystal rice dumplings have relatively high sugar levels.

Besides that, dumplings are also added with some other ingredients such as salted egg yolks, red bean paste, cured meat, fatty meat and chestnut. So, other than being high carbohydrate foods, dumplings are also considered as food that is high in sugar, fat and sodium!
