Who said having high cholesterol level is the privilege among obese people? Now, there is a tendency where skinny and lean individuals getting higher cholesterol levels as well. According to the National Health and Morbidity Survey in 2019, in Malaysia, out of two people, there could be a person suffers from high cholesterol level. In fact, besides obesity, there are still many causes that could lead to the rising of cholesterol levels.

The reasons shown below are the most commonly seen factors that could lead to high cholesterol risks:

1. Eating Habits: Consume too many high cholesterol foods such as meats, pork, egg yolks, animal livers, seafood and others.

2. The Amount of Exercise: Lacking exercises could lead to the increase of “bad cholesterol” low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and decrease “good cholesterol” high-density lipoprotein (HDL) instead.

3. Overall Health Condition: Some diseases such as diabetes and hypothyroidism would potentially cause the rising of cholesterol levels.

4. Family Medical History: If someone in the family suffered from high cholesterol problems, there could be higher possibilities where the next generation suffers from cholesterol risks as well.

5. Smoking: Smoking will lower the content of “good cholesterol (HDL)” and eventually increase “bad cholesterol (LDL)”.

High cholesterols can easily cause cardiovascular diseases (including strokes and heart attacks), diabetes and other life threatening conditions. Thus, it is important to pay extra attention to the factors mentioned above even though you have a thin body. It is always good to take earlier precaution and control your cholesterol levels when it is not too late.

According to the information provided by World Health Organisation (WHO), our cholesterol consumption should not be exceeding 300mg per day; if you suffer from cardiovascular diseases, it is in fact not okay to take in more than 200mg of cholesterols per day.

In order to maintain our cholesterol levels in a healthy index, other than preventing smoking and increasing the amount of exercises, we can actually lower our high cholesterol food intakes. Come and take a look at the foods with high cholesterol contents:

Crab (235mg/100g)
Prawn (154mg/100g)
